Traditionally life coaching is associated with career development, relationships, and health & wellbeing. Coachees seek out professionals who help them reach their targets, whether that is to become a strategic leader, to find a deeper connection with their partners or and losing weight. There are different methods of coaching, for example, intuitive, holistic, transformational and mindfulness. Underlying each method is that coaches help coachees to be motivated and empowered so that their goals are met.
We are facing many environmental crises, from the climate emergency to pollution, environmental degradation, resource depletion and species loss. We are losing our connection with the natural world and destroying our planet. We have heard reports of flooding, wildfires and plastic-filled oceans. What can we do to address it?
One solution to this problem is to live more sustainably. Sounds great, but what does that actually mean?
McGill University defined sustainability as “meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. In other words, we need to adopt lifestyles that reduce our impact on the environment so that society can progress without compromising on the quality of life.
So how do we translate this into practical steps to move to more sustainable living? What does it mean from a practical perspective? What tasks do we need to perform?
This is where it can become very difficult to know, as we all live differently. There are plenty of apps, books, podcasts and websites that offer advice on areas where we can make changes. These are great solutions for those who can make changes by themselves however there are also many people that need support, just the same as CEO’s, couples and dieters do. There are a lot of people who have the desire to be eco-friendly but feel stuck. This is where The Sustainable Life Coach can help.
Sustainability coaching works just like regular life coaching but from an environmentally friendly perspective. The coach works with coachees to find out about their current lifestyle and eco-goals. Together they create a plan that is broken down into achievable steps.
The coachee works on this roadmap to a more sustainable lifestyle and the coach holds them accountable for taking action. If there are any roadblocks or setbacks the coach empowers the coachee to overcome them; likewise, when there are successes the coach acknowledges the win and helps the coachee to keep going!
